On the Raleigh road near Smithfield [NC]
The [railroad] cars for the last few days have been crowded with officers & soldiers returning to duty. We have been in camp in this vicinity about three weeks; during that time daily drills & inspections with dress parade have been the order of the day. The morale of the army greatly improved – men in good spirits & cheerful. At night serenades to various Generals & others frequent, & short animating speeches in reply to the compliment. Genl. [Joseph E.] Johnston has made a vigorous effort to reduce the number of detailed men – to smoke out those who have ensconced themselves in soft places … A bill to re-organize the armies of the C.S. was passed 23rd Feb.
