the
battered
Army
of
Tennessee
retreated
,
encounters
with the
enemy
continued.]
One
Yankee
rode
up to
Genl
[Abraham
.
Buford
&
struck
him over the
head
with his
sabre
. The General not
dreaming
that an
enemy
was so near him
&
not
expecting
such a
salute
turned upon with
indignation
&
surprise
depicted
upon his
countenance
. Seeing an
enemy
before him he
seized
him by the
throat
&
shook
him
violently
. His whole
manner
&
look said as
plainly
as if
words
had been used
“how
dare
you,
scoundrel
, to
strike
Brig
.
Genl
.
Abe
.
Buford.”
But the
Yank
had no
extraordinary
respect
for his
sacred
person
&
endeavored
to
stick
. The General had no
idea
of being
ran
through,
&
being a very
strong
man
endeavored
to
pull
his
antagonist
from his
horse
. The
Yank
to
prevent
that
seized
the
pummel
of his
saddle
with both
hands
,
&
at this
time
Maj
.
Elliott
of
Genl
.
Lee’s
staff
rode
up
&
killed
the
Yank
with his
sabre
.
