Description |
December 11, [1864, near Nashville, TN] It is bitter cold, & many of our men are in a bleak bare field without shelter, & the wood they use has to be hauled to them in wagons. A neighboring pond is frozen over & some of the soldiers are enjoying the sport of skating. It hailed last week, & this cold spell succeeding the ground is covered with sleet. It is difficult for men to endure service in the field during such cold weather - some are without shoes, & many are half clad. Near Tupelo, Miss - Jan. 19th 1865 - Thursday Many events have transpired since the 11 of Decr. when I last made an entry in this book. The sun above us was then bright, & to our visions the prospect was cheering & encouraging - now it is black gloomy night. The star of the south is no longer in the ascendency. Sad reverses have befallen our arms, & as a southern soldier I have no heart to tell the story. When least we expected it the enemy attacked us in front of Nashville. They commenced skirmishing with us Dec. 15th & moved a strong force around to get upon our left flank. |
