Civil
War
Diary
of
Confederate
soldier
George
D.
Wise
Description
Dec
.
3rd
[1864]
near
Nashville
[TN]
Left
Franklin
Dec
1st
.
Marched
only a few
miles
from
town
&
bivouacked
for the
night
in
line
of
battle
…
Our
loss
in the
battle
at
Franklin
amounted
to about
3,400
in
killed
,
wounded
&
prisoners
. Both men
&
officers
behaved
with
unsurpassed
gallantry
,
yielding
up their
lives
in the
ditches
,
&
on the
parapet
of the
enemy’s
works. The
positions
of the
dead
plainly
told
how
nobly
they had
fought
–in
some
instances
the
hands
&
arms
showed they were in the
act
of
firing
–
in some the
heroes
lay
in front of the
enemy’s
line
–
their
hands
filled
with the
mud
clenched
in the
act
of
climbing
over into the
ditches
of the
foe
. On no
field
have I seen greater
proofs
of
courage
than I saw here. Each man, who
fell
,
deserves
a
monument
to his
memory
. They had to
advance
over a clear open
space
of
500
yards
under a
terrific
fire from an
enemy
protected
by
breastworks
with
head
logs
. They did it
bravely
…
Our
loss
in General
officers
was large
–
2
or
3
generals
killed
&
several
wounded
. Here
died
the
gallant
&
lamented
[
General
Patrick]
Cleburne
.
Officers
of all
grades
made themselves
conspicuous
for their
gallantry
.
