[Battle of Resaca Gordon & Whitfield Counties, Georgia; May 13 – 15, 1864, Atlanta Campaign Confederate forces - Army of the Tennessee; Union forces - Military Division of the Mississippi Casualty estimate: 5,547. The battle proved inconclusive.] Sat [May]14th [1864] [near Dalton, GA] … we laid down to rest only a few hours before day. I was with Genl. S[tevenson]on the Resaca road & had no blanket. We lay down as we dismounted form our animals as tired as ourselves – a short sleep - & very poor breakfast & we commenced the work of Sunday 15th May ’64 – a day ever to be remembered by me. Little did I dream that I should be borne that day from the field with a wound, considered at first to be mortal but a soldier carries his life in his hand, & knows not that he can reckon upon another day of life... |
